Last week I decided to drive 6 hours to Davis, CA to adopt a new puppy. Of course any road trip involves careful planning around food.

Best of Santa Barbara 2012: Eating

Dewars in Bakersfield. My first stop was at Dewars , a candy shop in Bakersfield. This was a Jonathan Gold recommendation — on an episode of Good Food , he mentioned a few spots in Bakersfield. One thing stuck in my mind: nut chews from Dewars. They have some wacky flavors peanut butter and jelly, spumoni , which are pretty good. But I advise you to stick with the originals.

I don't quite remember what I ordered but I think it was the bhel. It was so good and it hit the spot. It was spicy and just the way it should have been. Great place to rest! We were vacationing near Palm Springs, and changed our route homewards at the last minute, to I We had no Internet access, so no way of finding out if there would be any findable vegan food either on the drive or on the Monterey Peninsula once we arrived there rather late.

So we were thrilled to see a couple of billboards advertising the option of vegan Indian food.

Finding The Best Tacos in Bakersfield

We did spot the signage on the restaurant roof as we approached the off-ramp. We got the food to go, so that we wouldn't have to hunt for dinner in Pacific Grove a smart decision. The food travelled very well for the remaining hours of the trip, and was really satisfying. We had a large order of basmati rice which was perfectly cooked, an order of saag aloo mild which was extremely tasty, and an order of 2 very large samosas, which were spicy, but not too spicy for my sensitive mouth, and also tasty.

I assume the restaurant is oriented to Northern India, and in my experience, it is pretty impossible to find an all-veg No. India restaurant. The all-veg ones tend to be So. India cuisine, and serve a lot of dosas.

So I really appreciate the fact that this place has an extensive veg menu, and a specific, separate vegan menu, with a reasonable assortment of choices. Particularly being located on the I-5 corridor of endless unhealthy chain eateries. Now that I know it's there, I will always stop there on every future trip to So. Try our vegan Indian food! And what do you know, the bus took the very next exit for our rest stop. A very helpful and kind older gentleman showed me the separate vegan menu. They had vegan mango lassi, made with soy milk!

All I had to do was mention the bus, and he went back to the kitchen to make sure my order would come up quickly. And it did - fastest Indian food ever. Very hot and fresh! The potatoes in the samosas were shredded, making them extra flavorful.

The mango lassi was ice-cold, sweet and delicious - never had better. I won't be able to drive by this exit again without at least getting a lassi. My family and I were driving from the San Jose area to Arizona and saw some large signs on the side of Hwy 58 on the way to Bakersfield for some veg and non-veg Indian food. Buttonwillow is a tiny town about an hour west of Bakersfield and 2 hours north of LA, so it's in the middle of nowhere.

My first impression of the place was the rundown state of the building. We were nervous that the general area was unsafe. Once we stepped into the restaurant, we were the first ones there so we were greeted by a very friendly proprietor.

I found it a bit odd to have to pay for the food before you even see it. Now I know why after it's too late - the portions are ridiculously small and way overpriced. Granted, the food was delicious so I'm more a bit frustrated at the "inexpensive" status on Happy Cow. Great selection of food and tasty. Only negative was men's room was pretty trashed.

I stopped in after spending the whole day working. Visiting from out of town for work means you often skip lunch to get more done. I have eaten at Golden Corral in Houston. I have to say this location was much nicer. Friendly helpful staff Lots of variety and to me surprisingly tasty. Steak was delicious as was the pot roast and chicken. Great salad bar and the soup bar was awesome as well.

Lots of delicious desserts and good service. Flights Vacation Rentals Restaurants Things to do. Tip: All of your saved places can be found here in My Trips.
